Our distribution dated 1 June 2023

All important information about our distribution categories: live and reproduction

On 1 June and 1 July 2023, we will be paying out approximately 113 million euros in the live performance and public playback categories to our members and sister organisations – an increase of around
116 % compared to the corresponding distributable amount from the previous year.

In 2022, the music events market largely recovered from the setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite restrictions still being in effect through spring 2022, the market has almost entirely regained its pre-coronavirus level.

Further information about the live performance and public playback categories is available here.

Events with live music (categories U/UD, E/ED/EM and BM)

In the live performance categories, we will be paying out approximately 76 million euros to our members and sister organisations, more than three times the corresponding distributable amount from the previous year. For our members, it adds up to a recovery at long last from the COVID-19 pandemic years.

As of the second quarter of 2022, pandemic-related restrictions came to an end and the event sector got back into gear. This led to a marked upswing in cultural activities and a sharp increase in live events.

We have compiled further information for you in our information sheets in our categories U/UD/M and E/ED/EM/BM.

Public music playback (category: M)

The music playback sector – e.g. background music in gastronomic and retail outlets – experienced a similar recovery and, with an increase of around 12%, is set for continued growth.

During the first quarter, the live music sector was still affected by pandemic-related restrictions, leading to the cancellation of countless events. As in the previous two years, this also affected the distribution in category M.

Against this backdrop, the special provision concerning distributions in category M, passed by the General Assembly in response to these restrictions, will be applied for the 2022 financial year as well. Collections in this sector will therefore, as in the previous two years, be distributed in two stages, on 1 June and 1 July 2023. Details can be found in the special provision for category M.

Playback in discotheques (categories DK & DK VR)

Due to the closures of clubs and discotheques as a consequence of the pandemic in Germany since mid-March, monitoring was only carried out for a few months in 2020 and 2021. Nevertheless, it was possible to apply the usual process regarding the planned statistical projection method for these periods. The amounts generated in the 2021 financial year also partially relate to the 2020 usage year. As a consequence, the monitoring results available for 2020 and 2021 form a valid and representative basis for the distribution in the DK and DK VR categories.
