Radio and TV (categories R, R VR; FS, FS VR; T FS, T FS VR)

On 1 July 2023, GEMA will distribute €254.8m to its members and sister organisations in TV and radio categories.

This means that the total distributable amount in the broadcasting sector has risen considerably in comparison to the previous year (up approx. 12%). A higher broadcaster collection and an increase in income from collections for mechanical performance have contributed significantly to this positive result. As always, however, the individual effect this may have on your distribution depends on the respective contexts in which your works were used (e.g. length or broadcasting station).

For further information, please see our information sheets for categories FS, FS VR; T FS, T FS VR and categories R, R VR.

Cinema (category T)

In line with the market trend, the distribution amount in this sector has risen by 50% in comparison to the previous year.

For further information, please see our information sheets for categories T, TD, TD VR.

Distributions for media libraries (the new categories MED and MED VR)

The 2023 General Assembly resolved that two new categories are to be established: MED and MED VR. In the future, these categories will be used to carry out a separate collections distribution that GEMA is putting in place for the online offerings (video and audio productions) provided by broadcasting companies (“media libraries”).

As is standard for the online categories, collections in the new MED categories will, as a matter of principle, be use-based and paid out via direct distribution. Essential to this, however, is the establishment of a separate system for reporting uses in media libraries, which will require substantial adjustments on the part of the broadcasting companies as well as to GEMA’s system landscape.

Therefore, it will not be possible to carry out a use-based media library distribution for the 2022 financial year. Instead, collections will be distributed as a supplement to the overall distribution in categories FS and FS VR, probably in the second half of 2023.

Categories FS and FS VR cover the conventional broadcast of in-house and commissioned TV productions and therefore include the repertoire typically used in media libraries. GEMA is working at top speed towards being able to carry out the first use-based distribution in the MED categories.

Audio and audio-visual media (categories Phono VR, BT VR)

The distribution for the audio and audio-visual media categories (Phono VR, BT VR) continues to follow the market trend and has declined in comparison to the previous year. On the other hand, the vinyl sector continues to be extremely popular.

Since last year, in the physical audio media licensing sector, GEMA has in some cases been unable to draw up licence invoices due to an essential system changeover. Any payments that are still outstanding will be made in the upcoming distributions.
