The FRED JAY PREIS was launched after the death of the lyricist Fred Jay (1914-1988). Since then, the award is presented to a lyricist each year. The award winners have contributed to the development of the German song and the German music culture to a large degree. The prize is awarded under the patronage of the GEMA foundation.
Radio is the mass medium with the biggest global audience. It is a major contributor when it comes to getting people in touch with culture in general, and music in particular. Without radio, many people would be cut off from the opportunity to take part in cultural life. With its Radiokulturpreis, GEMA intends to acknowledge the importance of radio for cultural diversity in Germany.
