Detailed information on how to join the GEMA community

Those who compose music, write lyrics or publish musical works are entitled to receive fair remuneration if such works are performed or broadcast in public, reproduced or exploited in any other way.

GEMA as a fiduciary for music creators - and for you

Composers & Lyricists

We talk about the so-called exploitation rights of your creative contribution. They are governed globally on the basis of national copyright laws and international treaties.

No composer or lyricist is able to or wants to spend their own time to check how, where, how often and for how long their music titles have been and are being used. Furthermore, it is very time-consuming for individual authors to track and collect the respective remuneration for their creations.

In Germany, this is where GEMA comes into play: As a fiduciary recognised by the government, and as an association, it manages the usage rights on behalf of its members.

Music publishers

Those who publish music are entitled to receive fair remuneration if such works are performed or broadcast in public, reproduced or exploited in any other way. We refer to the so-called exploitation rights of the creative contributions published by you, and made by the composers you are looking after. They are governed globally on the basis of national copyright laws and international treaties.

No publisher, co-publisher or editor is able to or wants to spend their own time to check how, where, how often and for how long their publisher repertoire has been and is being used. Furthermore, it is very time-consuming for individual publishers to track and collect the respective remuneration for their activities as a music publisher.
