Press release of CELAS The online music service simfy has signed a licensing contract with CELAS GmbH. The contract allows simfy GmbH, for the time being until the end of 2011, to offer its users in Germany, Austria and Switzerland the online usage of mechanical reproduction rights of EMI Music Publishing's Anglo-American repertoire.
The users of simfy have the choice between two different usage models. They can either subscribe to the EMI catalogue via streaming-on-demand, or they can listen to the catalogue via online radio. Streaming-on-demand can be accessed in a version financed by advertising or in a version financed by subscriptions.
Alexander Wolf, managing director of CELAS GmbH, says, "We are pleased about the successful agreement with simfy. The signing of the contract illustrates that it is possible after all to license streaming-based business models in such a way that the business interests of both sides are served – the business interests of the licensee as well as the business interests of the creative copyright holders represented by CELAS."
Nick Williamson, managing director of CELAS GmbH, adds, "The negotiations with simfy were conducted quickly and in a straightforward and pragmatic manner. Now we are looking forward to working together in the future."
Steffen Wicker, founder and managing director of simfy GmbH, confirms this: "We are happy about signing a contract with CELAS on the Anglo-American repertoire of EMI Publishing. We were particularly impressed with CELAS' service-oriented approach during all of the discussions and contract negotiations."
Licensing contracts with CELAS make it easier for online music providers to acquire rights beyond the borders of their countries. This means all of the matters having to do with the mechanical reproduction rights of the Anglo-American repertoire of EMI Music Publishing can be regulated and coordinated throughout Europe through one contact, CELAS GmbH. This ensures copyright holders that they will receive an appropriate compensation, and also that the use of their works will be controlled all over Europe.
The Anglo-American repertoire of EMI Music Publishing includes, among other works, the works of Amy Winehouse, Beyoncé, Snoop Dog, and Queen.
