Dr. Harald Heker elected Vice-President of GESAC

The Annual General Meeting of the umbrella organisation of European collective management organisations (GESAC) was dominated by the massive impact of the corona pandemic on the music and culture industries. EU Commissioner for Culture, Mariya Gabriel, has assured creatives of her support. The assembly elected its new President and three new Vice-Presidents for the next two years.

At the Annual General Meeting of the umbrella organisation of the European collective man-agement organisations GESAC (European Grouping of Societies of Authors and Composers) on 25th June, GEMA's Chief Executive Officer and Chairman, Dr. Harald Heker, was elected as one of three new Vice-Presidents. Dr. Heker has been a member of the GESAC's Executive Commit-tee since 2012.

"I am very happy about the election. In the current situation, it is particularly important that we work together at European level to find solutions how to mitigate the potentially devastat-ing effect of the corona pandemic on the music and culture industries and to manage it as best we can," said Dr. Heker.

Due to the Corona pandemic, the AGM was exceptionally held virtually. In exchange with EU Commissioner for Culture, Mariya Gabriel, the participants discussed current measures to sup-port creatives in Europe as well as long-term strategies to overcome the current crisis. With the Digital Services Act and the topic of artificial intelligence, further important projects are pend-ing at EU level, which the European collective management organisations are going to focus on in the coming months.

Jean-Noël Tronc, Chairman of the Board of SACEM (France) was elected as the new President of GESAC. New Vice-Presidents are Dr. Harald Heker (GEMA, Germany), András Szinger (ARTISJUS, Hungary) and Victor Finn (IMRO, Ireland).

GESAC (Groupement Européen des Sociétés d'Auteurs et Compositeurs) is an association of 33 collective management organisations from Europe that manage the rights and interests of over one million creatives and rightsholders from various artistic fields. GESAC promotes cul-tural diversity and the development of copyright at European level.
