New festival distribution starting in 2026

From next year onwards, revenues from major festivals will be distributed more quickly and more frequently – in line with the interests of our members. Background: Over 300 major festivals take place in Germany each year, featuring more than 10,000 artists from all music genres. Thanks to modern monitoring systems, usage reports are often available in full just a few weeks after the events.

At this year’s General Assembly, resolution 16 was passed to introduce a quarterly direct distribution for all festivals with collections of €10,000 or more, starting in 2026. The first distribution will take place in the fourth quarter. As always, we will keep you informed of all updates – including applicable objection deadlines – here on gema.de.

MED, MED VR

First usage-based media library distribution

With the November payout, we are launching the first usage-based distribution of revenues from the online services of broadcasters ARD, ZDF, Funk, and Pro7-Sat1. For the 2024 usage year, approximately €8.3 million will be distributed – a strong signal of increased recognition for digital usage.

How royalties from media library usage are generated
Broadcasters provide us with all relevant information about their media library content: titles, musical and audiovisual elements, usage figures and timeframes. These data are usually supplied by specialised monitoring service providers. To distribute the revenues, we calculate so-called “streaming second values” and additional amounts based on the funds received from broadcasters and other sources. If we can clearly identify your works, you will receive a payout.

Already checked your account statement?
The new categories MED and MED VR will appear in your account statement with the respective amounts – for example: Composers - MED 2024 K, MED VR 2024 K; Lyricists - MED 2024 T, MED VR 2024 T.

The usage-based media library distribution takes place once a year – in 2026, it is scheduled for the July payout. Further information is available in our info sheets on media libraries.
