Earlier payments, more transparency: The new festival distribution has started

The new festival distribution scheme has successfully got underway with its first distribution. On 1 October, approximately EUR 3 million was distributed, covering 21 festivals, 779 setlists and a total of 10,303 work usages.

Creative professionals benefit directly from the new festival distribution, as royalties from festivals generating more than EUR 10,000 in revenue are now paid out significantly earlier. At the same time, the distribution process is becoming more transparent through more detailed statements and fairer by taking potential headliners into account when allocating royalties.

The distribution is based on monitoring data and setlists. Information such as line-ups, headliners or setlists, GEMA obtained the required details directly from the event organisers. For some festivals, not all necessary information or requirements were yet available. These festivals will be included in future distribution dates. The next distribution is 1 January 2027.

In the GEMA Onlineportal, under the "Festival Distribution" tile, you will find a list of monitored festivals as well as from 1 October 2026 an overview of festivals that have already been distributed and those still pending distribution. This allows you to track the current processing status at any time. For festivals that have already been distributed, claims can be submitted within nine months.

International

In the international categories A and A VR we distribute income collected by our sister organisations in respect of uses of the GEMA repertoire in their respective countries.

There will continue to be no distribution for France. This is due to a tax audit currently being conducted at our French sister society SACEM. For further information, please see International (withholding tax in France) under Our distributions on 1 January.

Information, on which countries and periods are distributed as of 1 October, can be seen here. For more information about our international categories, please visit our International page.

Rating and pension plans

As of 1 October, GEMA will distribute approximately €61 million to its members through the evaluation procedures, including the pension scheme for financial year 2025.

The financial resources for this distribution come predominantly from social and cultural funds. Overall, the total funds available have increased compared to the previous year. In some schemes, however, the amounts distributed have decreased. This is mainly due to the complete phase-out of COVID-related special effects and the first-time inclusion of revenue from publishers’ special accounts.

As usual, you can find details of your distribution under the evaluation schemes and the old-age provision scheme in the GEMA Onlineportal. Further information about the evaluation schemes and old-age provision is available on the relevant information page.
